The SAP Digital Boardroom: changing the dynamics of collaborative analytics

Digital_Boardroom_Cropped.jpgI had the opportunity to see the SAP Digital Boardroom in action in the flesh last week and it was fair to say that this will be a genuine game changer in the analytics world.

For those unfamiliar, SAP Digital Boardroom is based on the new SAP Cloud for Analytics solution and allows businesses to bring multiple analytics content together (dashboards from sales, finance, ops etc.) to form a meeting agenda and then display and interact with it during the meeting session – all via 3 linked touch screens.

The screens allow a structured story to be told with the information on the agenda, but the power really comes to life when there’s the need to answer ad-hoc questions and execute “what if” scenarios. Playing out the “what if” scenarios was particularly impressive, one screen shows you the effect of changing a top level KPI on the downwards KPI hierarchy, giving you a visual holistic view of how the organisation is effected (e.g. if I increase revenue, what does that mean for aftersales and headcount?). One of the other screens then shows you a predictive view of what that effect than scenario will have in terms of futures trends (e.g. what does increasing headcount this year mean in 3 years time?).

Interfacing analytical applications and dashboards onto touch screens for the use in boardrooms or meeting rooms has been possible for a long while but the SAP Digital Boardroom is more than just putting content on some nice AV equipment, it offers a single solution for the full end to end analytics lifecycle – data acquisition, modelling & consolidation, visualisation, presentation, interaction and engagement. The same content can also be consumed outside of the boardroom via PC or mobile devices, so it’s extended beyond that dedicated room or session.

The demo I saw was based on real time data from S4 HANA, but that’s only a slice of where data (accessible real-time or batched into Cloud for Analytics) can be integrated from in Cloud for Analytics.  Click the button below to see my previous blog for some further detail on the Cloud for Analytics solution.

Conclusion

The SAP Digital Boardroom truly makes the boardroom digital, moving away from offline and printed board and meetings packs which are still evident in many business (at all levels of the organisation structure). The SAP Digital Boardroom also goes further beyond its name because it’s clear that this type of technology can have many applications for collaborative sessions such as team meetings, operational rooms, reception areas and information walls to name just a few.
