On Thursday July 6th, AgilityWorks hosted a CodeJam event in London on SAP Cloud Platform Integration (Cloud Integration for short). This was the second time AgilityWorks had hosted a Cloud Integration CodeJam in the UK and it once again proved to be a great success. In total there were 13 delegates from various organisations and with different levels of experience with Cloud Integration. The SAP expert for the event was Udo Paltzer. We were very fortunate to have Udo as our presenter as he is the Product Manager for SAP Cloud Platform Integration & Internet of Things.

The venue for the event was in Canary Wharf, London. From the 32nd floor we had impressive views sweeping across London.

The CodeJam was divided into three parts; a theoretical part where Udo covered an overview and introduction of Cloud Integration, demos, customer and partner scenarios, roadmap review, and additional information. Following that the delegates had an opportunity to use Cloud Integration with two hands-on exercises.

Theory key points

  • SAP Cloud Platform Integration is SAP’s strategic cloud integration platform to integrate SAP Cloud applications with other systems, SAP and non-SAP, on premise or in the cloud.
  • SAP’s API Business Hub is the central catalog of all SAP and partner APIs for developers to build apps, extensions and open integrations with SAP.
  • The number of data centres around the world has increased enabling a 99.99% platform availability of Cloud Integration.
  • New features and connectivity options such as the JMS adapter will continue to be rolled out each month.
  • SAP provide a CIO Guide which is their vision for SAP Applications in Cloud and Hybrid Environments
  • Cloud Integration will support B2B messaging, initially for EDIFACT and ASCX12 messages.
  • The direction of Cloud Integration is to provide multi-cloud support to support infrastructure as a service offering from different vendors.
  • SAP is looking to move away from the Eclipse IDE and by Q2/2018 the Integration Designer perspective will be deprecated.

Hands-on session 1

In this session we looked at the integration of SAP S/4HANA Marketing Cloud with Twitter. The key learnings from this session were:

  • How to access and work with the web based tooling of SAP Cloud Platform Integration.
  • How to use connectivity options such as Twitter.
  • How to explore the content catalog and leverage pre-packaged integration content from SAP.
  • How to use the “Quick Configuration” option to quickly configure an integration flow without the need to edit the integration flow.
  • How to deploy, run and monitor integration scenarios including viewing of technical logs as well as message payloads of an integration flow.

Networking

One of the key benefits with these type of events is the networking and discussions between the participants. Between the two hands-on exercises the delegates enjoyed a buffet lunch and had a chance to network and share ideas.

Hands-on session 2

In this session we customised pre-packaged integration content with additional integration patterns, such as mapping, payload monitoring and security, for the integration of SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central with a non-SAP application. The key learnings from this session were:

  • How to access and work with the web based tooling of SAP Cloud Platform Integration.
  • How to use connectivity options such as SFSF adapter.
  • How to speed up an integration project by leveraging pre-packaged integration content from SAP.
  • How to deploy, run and monitor integration scenarios including viewing of technical logs as well as message payloads of an integration flow.

In summary

The delegates enjoyed the CodeJam session and found it extremely useful. SAP also allowed delegates to continue to use the Cloud Integration tenant that was provided for the CodeJam for up to two weeks after the session so that they could continue to practice and familiarise themselves with the product. Many thanks to Udo for taking the time to share his knowledge and insights on SAP Cloud Platform Integration!
